Optocoupler with infrared and phototransistor

The main purpose of an optocoupler is to create galvanic isolation between different circuits or different parts of the same circuit. It consists of a light source and light detector separated by an insulator such as air or transparent plastic.

An optocoupler can be created by using a LED and a photodiode or even by two LEDs.
